Blueprints for Science

An institute presenting a process skill approach to inquiry

Opportunity for Middle and High School Teachers

Thursday and Friday, June 26 and 27, 2008 Monday-Wednesday, June 30-July 2, 2008 9:00AM – 3:00PM 

This institute is designed to provide strategies for organizing and implementing science and engineering inquiry/projects in middle and high school classrooms.  Participants will learn how to help students: 

v      Develop an appropriate experimental question/topic
v      Conduct background research
v      Design a valid experiment
v      Record and analyzed data
v      Draw conclusion
v      Present results

 “ I found (Blueprints) helpful not only presenting scientific inquiry, but also in teaching methods and just hearing what other teachers are doing to teach science in the classroom.”  Blueprints participant, 2006 
Through discussions, activities, speakers, demonstrations and samples of student work, teachers will:

v      Connect inquiry with the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks
v      Modify existing labs to increase opportunities for classroom inquiry
v      Experience inquiry firsthand
v      Network with other teachers currently using inquiry in the classroom
v      Develop assessment tools

In addition, teachers will receive the following information:

v      Strategies for guiding students through the science fair process

v      How to organize a school science fair/exhibit 

Who:    Teams of 2 or more teachers from schools/districts are strongly encouraged.

Where:  Sarah Gibbons Middle School, Westborough, MA

When:  June 26, 27 and June 30, July 1-2 , 9:00AM – 3:00PM

Cost:     $50.00 (per individual)         $75.00 (per team)

Registration Deadline: May 20, 2008    Registration fees are non-refundable if cancellations are not received by June 10, 2008.

Graduated Credit: 3 credits will be available from Worcester State College.  PDP’s will be awarded.
